Top 5 reasons for boomers to have dental insurance

Dental insurance is important to your overall health.

Not only does it allow you to take advantage of preventatives like regular teeth cleanings, but it also ensures that if other problems pop up — say, a cavity — that you’re covered for that, too. Baby boomers, especially, need to make sure they see a dentist regularly to ensure they maintain optimal health as they age; therefore, dental insurance is a must-have. To learn more about why baby boomers need dental insurance to stay healthy and for other reasons, read on.

Save money at the dentist

One of the biggest reasons for having dental insurance, especially when you know you have some work that needs to be done, is that you can save some money on your procedures. Dental work can get expensive, and if you have proper dental insurance, you can save hundreds or thousands of dollars each year.

One concern with dental insurance is that you’ll be paying your monthly premiums and won’t use it. However, if you properly use your dental insurance, your payments won’t be in vain. You can get your cleanings and stave off any problems with your teeth in the future.

Regular trips for care

Let’s be honest — most people today don’t go to the dentist as often as they should. It gets expensive; and, because of this, it’s hard to justify going to the dentist if you don’t have a toothache or other immediate problem. However, when you have dental insurance, you’re able to make dental trips regularly. This ensures you don’t end up with serious problems with your mouth or teeth that you didn’t see coming.

Keep your whole self healthy

Having dental insurance also prepares you for the future. When you’re getting regular checkups, you’re able to know in advance if there are problems with your teeth, gums, or jaw. As you get older, you’re more likely to encounter significant health problems, and many of these lead to issues in your mouth. Understanding what to do to keep dental health problems at bay allows you to properly prepare for a healthy future.

Imagine a scenario: You have a tooth that is starting to ache. You think that it may be infected. Not only is your mouth hurting, but your overall health may start deteriorating too. The problem with this is that medical insurance plans don’t cover anything that has to do with your mouth. So, even if your tooth is infected, you’re not going to be able to get relief unless you go to the dentist.

Using the previous scenario, if you go to the dentist you can quickly get relief for your toothache and stop any infection in its tracks. However, if you don’t go to the dentist, you’re likely to let the infection fester. This is bad on many levels; not only are you still in pain, but you’re letting yourself get sick. A tooth infection can move into the jaw bone, infecting the bones of your mouth. Even worse, though, is that the infection can move into your bloodstream and cause severe infections throughout your body.

In case of emergency

Even if you don’t think that dental insurance is right for you because of the cost to benefits ratio, make sure you keep in mind that emergencies are unforeseeable. What are you going to do if you trip while you’re walking down the street and chip a tooth? How about when you’re playing with the grandkids, and they throw a toy at your mouth? Planning for emergencies is easy to forget but seriously important. If you do choose to ignore dental emergencies, you’ll end up paying hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

Keep up on previous work

Do you have dental crowns, root canals, or other dental work? If so, you need to make sure you keep up on these. As you’re considering whether to get dental insurance, keep in mind what work you’ve had in the past. If your crown comes off, you’re not going to be able to get it reattached for free. Ensuring that you have proper coverage on previous work helps keep your mouth in good repair.

While it’s not required that you have dental insurance, it’s highly suggested. You’ll be able to stay healthy and ensure that your teeth last you as long as possible. With dental care, you don’t have to worry so much about emergencies, too. Consider getting dental insurance or talking to your dentist about what insurance might be right for you.
