From drivers to athletes: who needs accident insurance

From athletes to seniors to anyone who drives, here’s who can benefit from accident insurance coverage.

Accidents happen all the time — and sometimes when you least expect them.

From a game of basketball in the driveway to a patch of ice on the sidewalk, accidents can happen almost anywhere.

Americans visit an emergency room for injuries on average 39.5 million times a year. And anyone who’s visited an emergency room knows the trip isn’t cheap.

An accident can be especially hard on your wallet if your regular health plan doesn’t cover all the expenses associated with the injury.

With the high cost of medical expenses, accident insurance coverage can provide a safety net when you’re the most financially vulnerable. Especially if that trip, slip, fall or car wreck means you can’t work for a while.

Not only does an accident insurance plan help pay for medical expenses, but it can also cover non-medical expenses like mortgage bills, utility, childcare and even transportation or lodging related to your care.

Some Americans may be at higher risk of an accident due to age or partaking in certain activities. If you like to regularly cruise the open road, play a game of pickup basketball on the weekends or find yourself nearing retirement, you may be one of those who can benefit most from accident insurance.

From athletes to seniors to anyone who drives, here’s who can benefit from accident insurance coverage.

People who drive

If you spend time on the road as a driver or passenger, you can benefit from accident insurance.

Nearly 2.35 million Americans are injured or disabled in a car accident every year. That means there’s a good chance you could be involved in a fender bender at some point in your life that causes you to take a trip to the doctor.

Accident insurance typically covers the types of injuries that can come with car accidents, including:

  • Coma
  • Death
  • Dismemberment
  • Fracture
  • Dislocation
  • Concussion
  • Brain injury

People who play sports

Whether you’re shooting a three-pointer or trying to block the puck from going in the net, the risk of injury is always a possibility if you (or your kid) plays sports.

About 30 million children and teens play an organized sport, and experience more than 3.5 million injuries each year.

Luckily, accident insurance helps cover you and your kids if you get an accident while playing a recreational sport.

Examples of the types of injuries that individual accident insurance plans typically cover include:

  • Fracture
  • Dislocation
  • Concussion
  • Brain injury
  • Eye injury

Some high-risk recreational activities or sports may not be covered by your plan, such as skiing, scuba diving, or bungee jumping. Talk to your plan provider to see which activities may be deemed high-risk for your plan.

As you get older, you may find yourself struggling to do the same things around the house that you always did.

From mowing the lawn to shoveling snow to putting up your own Christmas lights, taking care of your home can present a lot of opportunities for accidental falls and injuries as you age.

In fact, accidental falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among adults 65 years and older. In 2014, 2.8 million seniors were treated in emergency rooms for fall-related injuries.

Whether you’re still working full or part-time or live off a pension, retirement account or social security, any uncovered medical expenses from an accident can take a chunk out of your golden-years fund.

Accident insurance will typically cover the following injuries which may follow a dangerous fall:

  • Fracture
  • Dislocation
  • Concussion
  • Coma
  • Paralysis
